SUMMARY:Making America: Latino Poetry\, Writing\, and Placemaking in the United States
DESCRIPTION:In this public event\, Prof. Osiris Gómez will examine a 
 central theme in Latino literature: writing as a place-making strategy in 
 the United States\, as explored by authors included in the book Latino 
 Poetry. The Library of America Anthology (2024)\, edited by Rigoberto 
 González. The discussion is an invitation to explore the ways in which 
 different Latino writers propose nuanced ways of imagining and building a 
 plural America\, one where the lives and voices change the cultural and 
 physical landscape while it simultaneously changes them. Attendees are 
 encouraged to engage in a critical and creative conversation around the act 
 of writing\, listening\, and living in a state as culturally and 
 linguistically diverse as Minnesota. \n\n\n\n\n\nOsiris Anibal Gómez is 
 assistant professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies at 
 the University of Minnesota\, Twin Cities. His teaching and research topics 
 include bilingual Indigenous literature of Mexico\, Mexican bilingual women 
 writers writing in the US\, Chicano literature\, and translation studies. 
 In 2023\, he co-edited with Francisco Lomelí the critical volume\, Juan 
 Felipe Herrera. Migrant\, Activist\, Poet Laureate\, with the University of 
 Arizona Press. The book received the prestigious 2023 International Latino 
 Book Award for “Best Biography”.\n\n\n\n\n\nHaciendo América: 
 Poesía\, escritura y creación de espacios latinos en los Estados 
 Unidos\n\nEn este evento público el Prof. Osiris Gómez\, examinará un 
 tema central en la literatura latina: La escritura como estrategia de 
 creación de espacios en los Estados Unidos\; tal como lo exploran los 
 autores incluidos en el libro Poesía Latina. Antología de la Biblioteca 
 de América (2024)\, editado por Rigoberto González. La discusión es una 
 invitación a explorar las diversas formas en que diferentes escritores 
 latinos proponen maneras matizadas de imaginar y construir una América 
 plural\, donde las vidas y voces transforman tanto el paisaje cultural como 
 el físico\; al mismo tiempo que los transforman a ellos. Se anima a los 
 asistentes a participar en una conversación crítica y creativa sobre el 
 acto de escribir\, escuchar y vivir en un estado diverso cultural y 
 lingüísticamente como lo es\, Minnesota.\n\nOsiris Aníbal Gómez es 
 profesor asistente en el departamento de Estudios de Español y Portugués 
 de la Universidad de Minnesota\, en las Twin Cities. Sus temas de
