Hymnody with Gracia Grindal In-Person
Gracia Grindal, Professor Emerita of Luther Seminary, who also taught English at Luther College, will read from her books of poetry and talk about her work as a writer and translator of hymns for the Lutheran Book of Worship and other hymnals. She is a formal poet—that is she uses traditional forms of English poetry, like the sonnet, ballads, and other forms. Over the past years she has written almost 1000 sonnets, some 700 hymn texts and other poems. In addition to writing poems on Scripture, she has written poems about growing up in the Upper Midwest. Gracia has also written several books on the history of Norwegian American Lutherans in the late 19th century, such as the story of Elisabeth Fedde, the deaconess who founded Deaconess Hospital in Brooklyn and Minneapolis.
